live at Death By Audio. Overview (current section).
Ty Segall is the self-titled debut studio album by American garage rock musician Ty Segall, released on December 9, 2008 on Castle Face Records. Local garage rock musician John Dwyer, of Thee Oh Sees and Coachwhips, offered to release Ty Segall on his label, Castle Face Records.
Ty Segall (2008) With 12 tracks clocking in at just over 24 minutes, Segall’s first self-titled album, which was shepherded by fellow Bay Area rocker John Dwyer of The Oh Sees, is exactly what it should be: a sonic snapshot of a soon-to-be monster in embryonic form. Ty Segall is a lo-fi jumble of yelps and hiss and choppy guitar chords that show promise, but are clearly still proto-Ty. The songs here are performed mostly on acoustic guitars, with lyrics revolving around death and dreams and distance, and the volume never rises above a downcast roar. At the time, Segall told Billboard that I couldn’t have written a loud, heavy song if somebody had paid me to. Sleeper proved a nice break from Segall’s typical din, and a good reminder that there’s a lot going on behind those blown-out amps.

Various, Live at the Empty Bottle LP (Shimby Presents, 2012)(Segall, Girlfriend ) 26. Various, Group Flex LP (Castle Face, 2011) (Segall/Cronin, Fame and Suffragette City ) 25.
Thurston Moore performed at Death by Audio. So did Vivian Girls and Future Islands. As word of the shows spread, people began travelling to the warehouse from hours away. All of that began to wind down in September, 2014, when the building’s landlords told the warehouse dwellers that they would have to leave. Vice Media, it turned out, was taking over the building for a new headquarters that it said would be a space-age utopia, never mind the fact that something that aspired toward the utopian was already there. One scene shows water cascading into Death by Audio from an upper floor, where a worker, apparently hired by Vice, says he had cut a pipe. Another shows a worker painting over a large bit of graffiti created as part of an art exhibit inside the club and making a scatological statement about Shane Smith, Vice’s bearded impresario.
