Hedningarna ‎– Karelia Visa. Label: Silence (3) ‎– SRSCD 4744. Many of the songs on this album are quite menacing, not only the melodies and arrangements, but also the subject matter, if one takes time to read the translations in the insert. The truly remarkable thing about this album, is the fact that quite a lot of effects and programming were used, but it blends so well with the instruments, that one can't really tell. The end result is quite an organic sound, and in my opinion, stands out from the pagan/new age genre in this regard

Karelia Visa is Hedningarna's fifth original album (they also had a compilation called Fire). The title refers to a passport to the region of Russia called Karelia, which the Soviets took from Finland after WWII. The region is still ethnically and culturally Finnish, and the group (which consists of two female Finnish singers and three male Swedish instrumentalists) visited the area to collect some folk tunes. This album is the result.

Hedningarna (Язычники).

Their first album titled Hedningarna was released on Alice Records in 1989. In 1991, Hedningarna began their collaboration with Silence Records. They met the Finnish singers Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Tellu Paulasto. The album Kaksi! (Finnish for two) was released in September 1992. In 1993 Hedningarna was awarded a Swedish Grammis (the equivalent of Grammy) for The Best Folk Music Album of the year. The sales of Kaksi! reached 35,000 albums, which is very high for a folk music record in Sweden. British Sasha made a remix of Hedningarna's Kruspolska which climbed the charts in England. During the winter of 1998 Hedningarna travelled to Karelia, Russia to gather inspiration for their new album, Karelia Visa. It was recorded during the spring and summer the same year. A short tour around Spain took place that summer.

In "Karelia Visa" Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Anita Lehtola present hyptnotic vocal performances that bring the richness, depth, and beauty of Karelian runosongs to the hungry ears of American listeners. Karelia Visa" is a work that belongs in the collection of anyone who truly loves music. The songs "Mita Mina", "Ukkonen", and "Veli" are particularly noteworthy.
