Glass Box is a surprising thing to see in 2008, given the state of the industry; one would wonder how such a deluxe item could be possible. Philip Glass is truly fortunate to have made connections throughout his career with visual artists of such caliber as Chuck Close, Robert Mapplethorpe, Robert Wilson, and Annie Leibovitz; among composers, possibly only Igor Stravinsky has better portraits

Philip Morris Glass (born January 31, 1937) is a classical American composer. He is considered one of the most influential music makers of the late 20th century. His music is also often controversially described as minimal music, along with the work of the other "major minimalists" La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich. Glass has distanced himself from the "minimalist" label, describing himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures". Glass has founded his namesake musical group, the Philip Glass Ensemble, with which he still performs on keyboards, and has written operas, musical theatre works, ten symphonies, eleven concertos, solo works, chamber music including seven string quartets and instrumental sonatas, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.

Glass’s ascent from taxi-driving, garret-dwelling avant-gardist to toast of the opera houses must be an inspiration to struggling composers everywhere. Here’s his story laid out over ten CDs - the dense flurries of arpeggios draped over pop chords, the scudding rhythms; in short the minimalism that Glass more than anyone turned from outr? fad to the bums-on-seat wonder of modern classical music. Satyagraha and Einstein on the Beach still sound fresh, the string quartets bracingly spiky

Philip GLASS : Einstein on the beach. He uses the Ravel's Bolero genre or form so far and so amplified that we reach a totally hypnotic state. There too we have to keep still and quiet and silent in our nutshell of a boat and let it go down the current without any resistance or attempt at diverting it. £2. 0. 2 brand new from £1. 9.
