Albert "Papa" French was a New Orleans jazz musician, banjo player, and band leader. He was a banjo player in the Original Tuxedo Brass Band of New Orleans. This band was founded in 1910 and led for 44 years by Papa Celestin. After the death of Papa Celestin in 1954, leadership was briefly taken over by trombonist Eddie Pierson until his death in 1958.

A true heritage festival, Jazz Fest stands alone in presenting the highest caliber artists in such varied genres as gospel, blues, traditional and contemporary jazz, rock, R&B, Cajun, country, zydeco and much more. The Rebirth Brass Band and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band played there every Monday night for several years, wailing right next to the dancers. The scene was joyous, gymnastic and wild. This year’s Gala revives that fun and excitement. Menard & the Louisiana Aces, Otra, Oneida Longhouse Singers and Dancers, Hot Club of New Orleans, Mark Braud’s New Orleans Jazz Giants, Wild Tchoupitoulas and Wild Apaches Mardi Gras.
