Carlos Wesley "Don" Byas (October 21, 1912 – August 24, 1972) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, most associated with bebop. He played with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, and Dizzy Gillespie, among others, and also led his own band. He lived in Europe for the last 26 years of his life. Don Byas in Paris (1946–49). Those Barcelona Days 1947-1948. Le Grand Don Byas (1952–55). The Great Blue Star Sessions 1952-1953 With Dizzy Gillespie.
CD - Classics 1239). The great tenor-saxophonist Don Byas moved permanently to Europe in 1946 and was largely forgotten in the . However he played steadily during his decades overseas and recorded fairly frequently, even if most of the records were quite obscure in the United States. This CD is full of rarities. Byas is heard in Spain with the commercial dance band of Bernard Hilda, playing with some more jazz-oriented combos of Spaniards, and back in France during 1949-51 where his sidemen include pianists Bernard Peiffer, Art Simmons, and trumpeter Guy Longnon.

Don Byas was one of the pioneers of Swing saxophone. His 1940s performances with Count Basie rival those of Coleman Hawkins' but after he moved to France in the late '40s Byas was largely forgotten by the American public. But Byas made a fine living in Europe and visiting artists Stan Getz and Art Blakey were lining up to play with him. Like Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges he never updated his style after the Bebop explosion because he never had to - his recordings from the late '60s are as sublime as those made decades earlier.
