Taken as a whole, Desert Scores is an impressive LP charting a type of interbreeding which puts O'Brien in league with As One's Kirk DeGiorgio and Daniel Ibbotson as the most balanced electronic/jazz fusion producers Britain offered during the late '90s.

A good techno album, much like a good man or woman, is hard to find. That it’s difficult to translate dance music into the realm of the full-length is undeniable, but the truth is that techno isn’t like most dance music. To paraphrase Derrick May, the beats are an afterthought. Apart from ‘Mad Mike’s Disease’, which admirably approximates the hi-tech funk of Ian O’Brien’s beloved UR, Desert Scores is characterised by downtempo breakbeat techno that sounds almost offensively polite to begin with, but slowly reveals an inner mechanism of grit and complexity. You’ll find yourself returning to it again and again.

Ian o'Brien plays piano, guitar, bass, drums, uniquely blending his sound with electronic/computer based music to make something different. His 1st album 'Desert Scores' was released in 1996. 2 more albums 'Giagntic Days' and 'A History Of Things To Come' followed on UK Peacefrog recs.

DESERT SCORES has classic written all over it, and with good reason. From the opening track, the Detroit-fueled "Mad Mike Disease," there's a melodic and rhythmic propulsion that's impossible to ignore. The electro-funk-jazz of "Homeless" shows a complex understanding of the interaction of melody and syncopation

Hi Ian O Brien, You've got a good sound. Cynthia ww. ctr-radio. A lot of Ferox references were amazing for years. This one makes the break.
