Daedelus' thirteenth album and first outing for Anticon finds the Los Angeles electronica veteran continuing to cleverly splice up ambient textures into bouncy beats.
Daedelus runs a gamut of emotions on Drown Out, finding new keys to unlock his depths. Fragile beauty underpins Drown Out, the 12th album by Daedelus and his first for experimental hip-hop label Anticon. dandy Alfred Darlington always pours passion into his t beat-driven electromanticism. Family death and illness influence moods on these recordings, heightened by the bestilling loss of a close friend and collaborator who was only at the start of adulthood
Drown Out is a studio album by American electronic music producer Daedelus. It was released on Anticon in 2013.
Daedelus - Drown Out Dressed up as a Victorian dandy, and with a mad professor air about him, Alfred Darlington embodies the eccentricities of the music he produces as Daedelus. It's an image reflected in the loose concepts of some of his albums; 2011's Bespoke was an ode to haute couture, while the title of 2005's Exquisite Corpse-taken from a surrealist parlour game-alluded to the weird juxtapositions of beats and samples within.
Drown Out (CDr, Album). Daedelus shifts from Ninja Tune onto Anticon for DROWN OUT, though his musical sensibilities haven't changed one bit. The thick layers and momentary theramin on "Flat Faded" accompany a subdued beat for a nighttime haze, and "Paradiddle" takes a more angular approach to its melody. The wooziness of "At Attentions" contrasts the more stark beats and cut-ups of "Keep Still," and even though a few tracks swoon.
Drown Out is a studio album by American electronic music producer Daedelus . Bram E. Gieben of The Skinny called it "another fantastic album from a genuinely unique producer.
Drown Out is Daedelus’s first record for Anticon- he hops from label to label as easily as he hops concepts- but rather than displaying any artistic growth, he seems to be settling back into his old ways. That’s not to say that the moods he does settle on, however briefly, aren’t lovely. The back-to-back punch of Tiptoes, and Frisson, sets the listener up to think he’s in for a certain kind of experience: one in which heavy, head-nodding beats eventually give way to an elevation of angelic treble during songs’ climax. Drown Out has plenty of sublime moments, but as each of them has little do with any other it ends up sounding less like an album and more like a grab bag of hurried ideas, the best of which will eventually be experienced somewhere far more immediate.
